1.NEELAN - Having born to an army chieftain of the chozha king in the lineage of Malecha, and having a bluish hue.
2.PARAKALAN - Being a fierce warrior, he was bestowed with this title by the chozha king.
3.PARAKALA NAYAKI - Taking a nAyika role ( a heroine)he expressed his devotion towards the lord .
4.KALIAN - impressed by his boldness and valor, EmperumAn himself gave him the title.
5.CHATUSHKAVI SILAMANI/ NAALU KAVI PERUMAL - Was well versed in writing four different kinds of poetic form like ASU Kavi, Madura Kavi, Chitra Kavi and VistAra Kavi.
6.SHAT PRABANDA KAVI - His six poetic creations similar to the six angams of the vEdAs.

HAGIOGRAPHY OF THIRUMANGAI AZHVAR:
NEELAN TO PARAKALAN:
True to the clan that he was born in, was well trained in warfare and won many battles for his king and was crowned, the king of Tirumangai region with the title name “PARAKALAN”.
He had his own ministers

He was always victorious with the help of his horse “ADALMA” and the elephant “AMARIL KADAMAKALI”.
MEETING HIS LIFE COMPANION KUMUDAVALLI :
In the place called *TiruveLakkuLam*, few celestial ladies frequently visited a lotus pond and enjoyed having fun. Among them one lady got laid back and stood plucking the kumuda flower. She was noticed by a devotee and medical practitioner who came that way, and accepted to safeguard her by taking her along with him as his own daughter. He briefed his wife and they both raised her happily as kumudavalli, as she was found plucking kumuda flower.
Hearing about her beauty from his close associates, Tirumangai mannan set to meet the medical practitioner and happened to meet her there. Enquiring about her to her father, he proposed to marry her . In the meantime kumudavalli laid some conditions stating, she is with the idea of marrying only a vaishnavite who has undergone “pancha samskaranm” .
Accepting to this condition, Mannan went to Tirunaraiyur and got sanku, chakkaram embossed from nambi perumAL and accepted manthrobadesam from TirukkannapurathammAn. He returned back with all the twelve tirumaN kAppu applied on his body and stood before kumudavalli.
At this juncture, she had another task before him. This time it was to feed 1008 Sri Vaishnavas and accept their sripAda teertham ( the water from the bAgavatAs feet) for a complete whole year. Tirumangai Mannan accepted the challenge and they happily got married.

CHALLENGES ENDURED:
Elaborate arrangements were made for the tadeeyArAdanam in a place called mangai madam for feeding the srivaishnavites. Enormous amount of money was needed to continue without a break and so Tirumangai Mannan could not deposit the assigned tax money to the chozha emperor. Annoyed emperor ordered his army chief to arrest him. But before he could do so, parakAlan defeated the army chief mounting on his horse ADALMA (ஆடல்மா) and chased him away. Knowing this, the king himself advanced with his mighty army to capture parakAlan. Fierce fighting went on and understanding the strength of parakAlan the king decided to catch him cunningly . As a mark of appreciating his valour, the king came closer to him and deceitfully ordered his minister to imprison him. Having been imprisoned, parakAlan refrained from eating anything continuously for three days. Suddenly The lord of Kanchi (pEraruLALan), appeared in his dream and asked him to reach Kanchipuram, where he will find the necessary revenue. Immediately parakAlan went along with the king’s subjects. Due to the benevolence of the lord, on the riverbank of vegavathy, he found the hidden treasure and repaid it to the king and hence was released. Learning the situation , even the king helped him by giving the money.
RESORTING TO DACOITY :
As all the resources were not sufficient to continue the feeding, he stepped into the extreme measures of robbery along with his ministers. Moved by the perseverance of Tirumangai Mannan, EmperumAn decide to help him. In the guise of a newly married couple fully bejewelled, the Divya dampati (PiraaTTi and perumAn) came through the way of tirumaNam kollai , tiruvarasu where parakAlan and his associates were hiding. Immediately they plunged into action and robbed them of their jewels, except the toe ring of EmperumAn which was very tight. As he resorted to bite with his teeth to remove it, EmperumAn asked him, “Nee em kaliyano?” Bestowing him with the title *Kaliyan*.
Then when parakAlan, tried to bundle up the jewels and take away, it never moved from the place. Getting restless, he enquired the lord if he had done any magic. EmperumAn asked kaliyan to get closer to him so that he can reveal the magic. As he went closer to listen, EmperumAn revealed the *ashtAkshara tirumandiram* and the Divya dampati revealed themselves to azhvAr as well.
Realising the truth and having been bestowed with mayarvara madinalam, AzhvAr started to pour out the words saying “vAdi nen, vAdi varundinen” and wrote six prabandams.
In this PERIYA TIRUMOZHI consisting of 1084 verses, AzhvAr has done mangalAsAsanam (felicitation) for 86 temples out of the 108 Divya Desam . Visiting all the temples personally, he has penned in the order starting from TIRUPIRIDI to TIRUKKOTTIYUR.
MARK OF RECOGNITION:
Visiting all the temples from the north, he reached Chozha mandalam (region). As he was going, shouting titles such as ‘ALINADAN’, ‘ARULMARI’, ‘NALUKAVIPERUMAL’, ‘NAMKALIYAN’, ‘KONGUMALAR KUZHALIYARVEL’, ‘MANGAIVENDHAN’, ‘PARAKALAN’, ‘PARAVADIMATHAGAJAKANDEERAVAR’, a group of disciples of the great poet *TIRUNAVUKKARASAR* blocked him and initiated for a debate with NAVIKKARASAR. Astounded by the knowledge of Tirumangai AzhvAr, nAvukkarasar presented his spear in appreciation which can be seen holding by him and acquired the title *“VELVENDAN”*.
He was instrumental in building the mandapam, gopuram, prAhAram and the madil (rampart) for tiruvarangam temple.
