PERUMAL TIRUMOZHI - 7

PASURAMS 708 TO 718

Alai neeL karumbu

According to various circumstances and the state of mind one is in, one can enjoy Lord in different kinds of relationship, like husband and wife, mother and child, teacher and student or as two friends. Here in this tirumozhi, the motherly instinct of AzhwAr becomes prominent. Not finding his child close to him, he personifies himself as Devaki and tries to reminiscence each and every stage of kaNNan's childhood. The time frame here is that, Devaki laments this when she sees KaNNan after He frees her on the death of Kamsa.

THE CRADLE STAGE: [New born]

708 Oh my child!, who is like the well grown sugarcane ready to be sent to the factory for juice extraction, lullaby to you *tAlO!* the one who has wide eyes like the lotus petal, lullaby to you *tAlO!* the one who has hues like the blue ocean, lullaby to you *tAlO!* the one who is like the elephant calf, lullaby to you *tAlO!* Oh! My child with long fragrant locks of hair, lullaby to you *tAlO!*.what an unfortunate mother am I, who stands last in the line of unfortunate mothers who cannot sing to their hearts content lullaby to their own child like this ? (1)

ENJOYING IN THE CRIB:  [ Second month ]

709 Oh! KEsavA, with your collyrium laid, lotus like eyes, you keep gazing at the rotating toy hung above the bar of the cradle. Keeping your pinkish little feet that is darker on the upper side well inside the cradle and clasping all your pinkish little fingers to your palm, having a stature alike a small water laden dark cloud, you lay in the cradle like a cute elephant kid.

It's me, who is so unfortunate to be unable to enjoy seeing this sight and so I am totally ruined because of this. (2)

RECOGNISING STAGE : [ Third stage ]

710 When a child is born in the house, all the relatives and friends will take the child on their laps and fondle the child saying, Oh my master! *yendaiyE*, Oh the star of our clan! *yendan kula perunchuDarE*, Oh the bull, having the beauty of the thunderous rain bearing clouds! and so on. In the same way they cuddle You and when they ask, “who is your father?”, with your little pinkish finger and with a slight glance from the corner of your eyes, You happily point out to Nandagopar as your father. Devaki laments saying, "how fortunate Nandagopar is as he has held the hands of yashOda, whereas my husband Vasudevar is very unfortunate". (3)

THE YOUNG LAD :

711 Oh krishNa!, even though I stand enjoying your youthful stage now, having a bright face like the full moon, well formed muscular arms, broad shoulders and chest, your curly locks of hair on the crescent shaped forehead and Your beautiful divine eyes, I keep repenting, having missed your toddler stage where the child recognises none other than its own mother. This self pity keeps killing me, not allowing me to enjoy your present stage. "What do I do KrishNa?  I have been such a sinful mother". (4)

STANDING STAGE:

.712 I stand denied of getting a kiss from your sweet lips, as the chutti from your forehead keeps dangling. I missed listening to your babble as you put your tiny fingers in your mouth, when I keep admiring at your face thinking and feeling proud that you look exactly like your father. As I stand denied of all these pleasures, Yashoda was fortunate to enjoy every stage of yours as a child. (5)

THE FIRST STEP:

713 Oh dear KaNNa! Having eyes like the cool lotus flower, unable to steadily walk, you crawl for a while and then wobbly toddle around. Reaching the sand on the streets and after playing, You come back and get nursed from your mother, hugging her tight with your Sandy hands. I was misfortunate to enjoy all this. I was not blessed to eat even the left over food that you eat thrusting your fingers into your mouth. For what reason did my mother even gave birth to this born sinner? (6)

714 Oh! My dear son gOvindA!, born from my stomach, You become the heart throb of everyone easily(kuzhakkanE)!. Alas! I have lost the pleasure of having you on by elbow, as you keep meddling with one of my nipple while sucking milk from the other and in between look at my face and glance a smile at me. (7)

715 I was unfortunate, not only to pamper but to scold you even. Paddling with your tender unblossomed lotus like hands into the pot of butter such that it gets dilapidated and putting it into your mouth, squiggling your body as your mother finds a thick rope to whack you, “why you did so?”, your pinkish mouth smeared with thick curd, expressing the fear in your tear filled eyes, unable to swallow the mouthful and wondering what your mother is going to do next? Squishing your beautiful coral lips and finally hugging her legs in fear. YashOda enjoyed all these compassionate deeds of yours and also the extent of extreme bliss (paramAnanda anubhavam). (8)

716 My dear krishNa! For protecting the cows and the cowherds,You lifted the gOvardhana mountain as an umbrella. You joined hands with all the gOpikAs and performed rAsa krEda. You juggled with the pots performing kudakoothu. Throwing vatsAsura ( the disguised calf ) you felled all the wood apple (viLAmpazham) and put and end to both the asurAs . With your divine feet you danced on the hood of kAliyan. All these meritorious feat that you performed in AyarpAdi, witnessed by everyone, not one was I destined to proudly see and enjoy. If at all there is any way that I can see it now, I shall consider myself blessed. (9)

717 Oh! My child KrishNa, you were born to this Kshatriya women, raised by a cowherdess, and nursed by a pootanA. Leaving the milk, you drank poison. Not only did you drink the poisoned milk, you drank her life even, such that her flesh and blood dried away and her nerves got burnt and she died. Oh! My dark hued boy, who put an end to Kamsa. I stand last in the line of mothers who stand for not feeding their babies . I am still holding my life to see if any one of these days I might get a glimpse of you. (10)

718 After slewing King Kamsa of the huge wealthy city of vadamathura, Krishna came to free the divinely blessed Devaki from her bondage. Upon seeing Him, Devaki broke out and lamented her misfortune in not being able to witness any of his divine fete though being His mother. The King of Kolli region, who has adorned his crown with the divine feet of the Lord, kulasEkarAzhvAr has put into tune singing verses about this. Those who sing these verses by heart will easily reach the eternal abode (Sri vaikuNtam) swiftly (naNNuvAr ollai nAraNan ulagE). (11)
