THE BIRTH OF KANNAN 

After having the Darshan of The Lord and his consorts, Periazhwar enjoys “The Birth of Krishna” before he starts rearing HIM considering himself as YasOdha PiraaTTi.

13.vaNNa maadaNGgaL soozh *thirukkOttiyoor* 

kaNNan kEsavan* nambi piRanthinil* 

eNNey suNNam* ethirethir thoovidak* 

kaNNan muRRam* kalandhu aLaraayiRRE. (2) 1.

13)KaNNan KEsavan is born in Thirukoshtiyur just as in ThiruAyarpaadi (Gokulam). All the residents are over joyous that they spray fragrant oil and turmeric at each other making the place so slushy. (1)

14: Oduvaar vizhuvaar* ukandhaalippaar* 

naaduvaar n^ampiraan* eNGkuththaan enbaar* 

paaduvaar kaLum* palpaRai kottan^inRu* 

aaduvaar kaLum * aayiRRu aayppaadiyE. 2.

14)Having heard the news of His birth , the whole Ayarpaadi runs hither thither excited , shouting in joy , falling and getting up and screaming “Where is He?” amidst the thunderous musical organs and dances. (2)

15: pENich cheerudai* piLLai piRandhinil* 

kaaNaththaam puhuvaar* pukkup pOdhuvaar* 

aaNoppaar * ivan n^ErillaikaaN* thiru- 

vONaththaan* ulahaaLum enbaar kaLE. 3.

15)People who come to see Kutti Kannan say, who can be compared to Him? Who can be equal to Him? He who is born in Thiruvonam star is the ruler of the world. (3)

16: uRiyai muRRaththu* urutti n^inRaaduvaar* 

naRun^ey paalthayir *nanRaakath thoovuvaar* 

seRimen koondhal* avizhath thiLaiththu *eNGgum- 

aRivazhindhanar* aayppaadi aayarE. 4.

16)Seeing The Lord born in their midst, the folks of Ayarpaadi  literally loose their senses forgetting themselves and rejoice, throwing milk, curd, ghee and even letting their hair loose. (4)

17: koNdathaaLuRi *kOlak kodumazhu* 

thaNdinar* paRiyOlai sayanaththar* 

viNdamullai* arumbanna pallinar* 

aNdar miNdip *puhundhu neyyaadinaar. 5.

17)The cowherd folks who had gone out, the ones who hold their butter pots (Uri), sharp mace-sticks (mazhu)and sleep on bamboo mats (pari Olai), entering Ayarpaadi smeared themselves with ghee in extreme happiness. (5)

18: kaiyum kaalum n^imirththuk *kadaara n^eer* 

paiyavaattip* pasuNYchiRu maNYjaLaal* 

aiya n^aavazhiththaaLukku* aNGgaandhida* 

vaiyam Ezhum kaNdaaL* piLLai vaayuLE. 6.

18)YashOdha PiraaTTi gives Him bath by gently massaging and stretching His hands and legs with turmeric water. When she opened His mouth for cleaning His tongue, YashOda saw all the seven Lokas inside. (6)

19: vaayuL vaiyakam kaNda* mada n^allaar* 

aayar puththiran allan* arundheyvam* 

paayaseerudaip* paNpudaip paalakan* 

maayan enRu * mahizhndhanar maadharE. 7.

19)When she saw all the Lokas in his mouth, she realised that,He is not an “Ayar Puthiran”, but the supreme Lord Himself. None other than the Tirumaal “Mayan” Himself. (7)

20: paththun^aaLum kadandha *iraNdaa n^aaL* 

eththisaiyum *sayamaram kOdiththu* 

maththa maamalai*thaaNGgiya maindhanai* 

uththaanam seythu* uhandhanar aayarE. 8.

20)On the twelfth day after the child was born, His naming ceremony (nAmakaraNa) was done. The Ayarpaadis decorated all directions with flags ( torAnamS) and hailed the birth of the Lord who carried the “Govardhana” mountain. (8)

21: kidakkil thottil *kizhiya uthaiththidum* 

eduththuk koLLil* maruNGgai iRuththidum* 

odukkippulkil *utharaththE paayndhidum* 

midukkilaamaiyaal *naan melindhEn n^aNGgaay. 9.

21)In this  Pasuram YashOda laments how little Kannan troubles her by kicking the cradle ,jumping on her waist when carried and thus she emaciated (மிடுக்கிலாமையால் மெலிந்தேன்)(melindhen), due to the naughtiness of this Toddler. (9)

22: sen^n^elaar vayalsoozh* thirukkOttiyoor* 

mannu n^aaraNan *nambi piRandhamai* 

minnun^ool* viShNuchiththan viriththa *ip- 

pannupaadal vallaarkku* illai paavamE. (2) 10.

22)Phala Shruti 

Summing up this decad , Vishnuchittah says, “their sins will be washed away “, for those who chant these 10 verses on Thirukkotiyur KaNNan. (10)
